[CF Devotionals] 2013-10-07 - What Would the Mothers of Infants Say?

- - - - - - -

Luke 18:15-17

But Jesus called the children to him and said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.” (Luke 18:16 NIV)

Jesus’ disciples didn’t like the idea of people bringing babies up to Jesus. Jesus did not have time to dote on all these babies, they may have thought. While the disciples wanted us mothers to take our children and go away, Jesus always wanted the little ones close to Him. God saw past the crying, spitting, and cooing - and viewed tender faith. The disciples failed to see the necessity of Jesus praying for and blessing the young ones, and they tried to put an end to it. Jesus rebuked their actions, acknowledging that the disciples were wrong in their assessment, and He blessed the children. Jesus’ actions are evidence that all life is important to the Lord.

We, too, saw the importance of presenting our sons and daughters to Jesus at an early age. We did not let the disciples’ opposition stop us from developing our children’s spiritual foundation. Jesus confirmed to us that we were doing the right thing. (see Mark 10:14) Jesus said that to enter Heaven, a person must have total trust and faith, similar to a child.

Lord, I want to be like a child, full of hope and discovery. I want to receive the kingdom of God as they do. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
