2013-06-15 - More Than a Sacrifice
Proverb 21:3 "To do what is right and just is more acceptable to the Lord than sacrifice." (NIV)
The Book of Leviticus gave the priests of Israel specific instructions on how to make sacrifices for the sins of the Hebrew people. These requirements were listed numerous times in the Old Testament.
The writer of Proverbs addressed the issue in today's verse. God looks at the heart of the sinner. He wants the sinner to repent, but much more so, God wants us to do what is right. God wants our hearts and lives to be acceptable to Him, by doing His will and serving other people with love and compassion. How can you serve those in your life - your family, friends, coworkers, church members - even those who are difficult. Jesus talked about this in Matthew 9:13, when he quoted the prophet Hosea, saying "I desire mercy, not sacrifice." (Hosea 6:6) We can best serve Christ when we show love, justice and mercy to those around us. How can we do that today?
