[CF Devotionals] 2013-06-13 - Prayers for a Friend

1 Thes 5:17 Pray without ceasing;

If you ever need a reason to pray just pick up the newspaper or turn on the news.  Bad news sells I hear and it seems to be easy to find. That leads to the thought of the nature or mankind that is given to sin and self. And believers too must always be wary of pitfalls - or as Paul says, the sin that so easily over takes us. The world needs prayer in everything from financial issues to internal strife. Governments and people in authority - whether you agree with them or not - need prayer. The church needs prayer to be a clear light and witness to the world. Friends and family need prayer.

In the last year I was reconnected with a good sized group of my friends from college. It had been more than 20 years since many of us had seen each other when we got together. Last week one of our number lost her only sister unexpectedly. She made left a note for us all and left to be with her family. Those of us who are believers have been praying for her and all the affected families. There is a family now without a sister and daughter, there is another without a wife and mother and yet another without a daughter-in-law. There are friends who have lost one of their group as well.

I have another friend who has left this mortal life for Heaven several years ago. She would spend hours watching television with a notebook in her lap - praying for whatever news or problem appeared on the screen. As far as prayer goes she put me to shame for the level of her faithfulness. She is missed by many. The last thing I told her was if I did not see her again in this life, I would see her in the next.

My pastor has a saying that, "Short prayers are long enough." There is real truth in this. In the rush and crush of daily life, someone confides a need for prayer grab them by the hand and pray for them right there - quickly. Come back to it when there is more time and pray again.

Be thankful to the Lord for the good things too. It is so easy to miss the good things. Stop and think back 24 hours and find the good things from the simple - you got home safely, to the amazing like a birth or something at home or work or for a friend going well. It may take a few minutes to readjust your focus but it will be worth it.

Talk to God - and listen too. Remember that Mary had taken the better part sitting at Jesus' feet.

Grace & Peace,
