When David, King of Israel died, he was succeeded by his son Solomon. The new king went to Gibeon to make sacrifices to God. While Solomon was there, God appeared to him in a dream. In 1 Kings 3: 5, God said, "Ask for whatever you want me to give you." (NIV). First, Solomon thanked God for showing favor to him by putting Solomon on the throne. Then, Solomon replied that he wanted a "discerning heart" so that he could wisely administer justice to the Jewish people. God was so pleased by Solomon's request, that He gave Solomon riches and honor in addition to wisdom.

God wants us to have our priorities in order. He wants us to put Him first. We can then make requests of Him, when we have a right relationship with Him through His Son Jesus Christ. There are numerous passages in the New Testament where we are encouragied to make requests of God through prayer. In James 5:16, we are told that "the prayers of a righteous man are powerful and effective." (NIV) So, what would you ask of God if you had one request? Don't be afraid to ask.
