2012-11-17 - Actions Speak Louder Than Words
"Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says."--James 1:22
We have all heard the saying that "actions speak louder than words." In James 1:22, we find the same expression in Biblical terms. All through the Bible, we find instructions on how to live. In the Old Testament, the Ten Commandments explain how we are to live with God and one another. The Book of Proverbs is full of practical advice on how to live fruitful lives. And in the Gospels, Jesus teaches us how to live as a result of the sacrifice He has made for us. The Epistles of Paul and Peter further explain how we are to live changed lives, because of what Jesus did for us.
So we know that we are to live differently because we are Christians. Yet knowing what to do and actually doing it isn't easy. We know we are to love our neighbors, yet we lie, cheat, steal and harm each other. Or, we see our neighbors in need and don't help them. We don't put our faith into action. James puts it simply, "Do what it (the word) says." We all can follow that advice. Are we doing what the word says?
