2012-07-09 - What Would Martha Say?
But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, "Lord, don't you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!" (Luke 10:40)
One day, Jesus was visiting us, and I was busy being the ultimate hostess - while my sister Mary was listening to Jesus talk. I had a sense of obligation to be hospitable to our guest. Finally I couldn't take it anymore. I was tired of doing all the work, while Mary didn't lift a finger. Mary did not want to miss anything Jesus had to say. Mary was so enthralled. She wasn't listening to a word I'd say. The only thing that matter to her is Jesus' words. She was always one who had a hard time multi-tasking. What about me? Didn't she know I wanted to listen, too?
I asked Jesus to make Mary help me. He could tell I was worried over many things, but Jesus told me what I wasn't looking to hear: there was only one thing I needed to be concerned about, and that was Him, not being a super hostess or cooking a superb meal. I suppose the work could keep until after we listened to Jesus and been encouraged by Him.
Lord, I have a tendency to get offended fairly easily. Like Martha, I need Your perspective on situations. Your words may not be what I want to hear, but I know they will be what I need. In Jesus' name I pray, Amen.
