2012-05-07 - What Would a Sanctimonious Person Say?
But the tax collector stood at a distance. He would not even look up to Heaven, but beat his breast and said, 'God, have mercy on me, a sinner.' (Luke 18:13)
I prayed, silently thanking God. As a Pharisee, I wasn't like other people, especially that guy there, the tax collector. Acting like he is truly praying. I reminded God of my good deeds like fasting and tithing, not that God could have forgotten, but I wanted my deeds fresh and in the forefront of His mind.
The tax collector over there is so ashamed of himself that he can't even raise his eyes up to God. I do not know the man personally, but it is said that a person in that profession is usually a wrongdoer and deceitful. The Lord is gracious, so I suppose if the man asked for mercy, God should oblige him. I am grateful I am not in that man's shoes.
Lord, I feel better now that I have told You my heart. After I prayed, I experienced peace. Thank You for not keeping a scorecard of my actions. In Jesus' name I pray, Amen.
