2012-05-01 - What Would Matthias Say?
Then they cast lots, and the lot fell to Matthias; so he was added to the eleven apostles. (Acts 1:26)
Peter brought up the idea of filling the spot left by Judas Iscariot's death, in order to fulfill David's words in the Psalms. (Psalm 109:8) It wasn't like a job opening; it was more an opportunity to change my life and the lives of others.
I met the criteria to become a disciple. The person had to have traveled with Jesus and the disciples from the very beginning and not be a stranger to Jesus' ministry and resurrection. It came down to Barsabbas and me.
Peter and the other disciples prayed that God would show them if Barsabbas or I were God's choice. So the disciples cast lots, the lot fell to me, and I was added to the eleven original disciples. I was not going to spend my time contemplating why and for what reason I became a disciple. I could not look at it that way. I was not going to feel like I was replacing Judas, or that I feel I stepped on Barsabbas' toes. Those thoughts may have crossed others minds - but not mine.
Lord, It is easy to let my emotions get the better of me, especially when I rightfully deserve praise. Help me keep a level head, and to honor You, instead of focusing on what I want to happen. In Jesus' name I pray, Amen.
What would it be like to be one of Jesus' twelve disciples?
