2012-03-31 - Journey to the Cross
As Jesus headed towards Jerusalem , He tried to prepare His disciples for the His crucifixion, death, and resurrection. In last week's study, the disciples tried to rebuke Jesus when He told them of the upcoming events.
In Mark 10:32-34, Jesus again told His disciples that He would be put to death and rise after three days. This time, their response was different. James and John pulled Jesus aside and made a startling request. They wanted to "sit at your right and left in your glory." (Mark 10:37, NIV) The two wanted positions of power and prestige. Jesus responded that the two didn't know what they were asking. Were they willing to suffer and die alongside Jesus?
He went on to explain to them that power and position were not important. Jesus said, "Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all. For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many. (Mark 10:43-45, NIV)
Are we willing to sacrifice our power and authority? Are we willing to serve others? Are we willing to follow Jesus' example?
