2012-03-17 - Getting Rid of the Idols
Before the people of Israel entered the Promised Land, God gave them specific instructions on what they were to do. One of those instructions was to destroy the altars, sacred stones, worship sites, and idols of the inhabitants of the land they were entering. (Deuteronomy 7:5) God did not want His chosen people to be influenced by the pagan worship practices of the Hittites, Girgashites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites. God didn't want anything to get between His people and Him.
What are some of the things that interfere with our relationship with God today, which we should ask God to help us remove? The most obvious examples might be celebrities such as athletes and musical stars who are idolized, but less obvious answers might be: habits we don't want to give up, pastimes that keep us out of God's house during worship times, whatever we think about at night that keeps us awake etc. Although we don't worship stone idols, are their things in our lives to which we give our devotion? What are the relationship blockers in our lives?
During this season of Lent, when we are fasting, praying, and studying, perhaps we can look at the areas of our lives that hinder our relationship with God. Are there any false idols are we allowing to get in the way of our walk with our Savior?
