2012-02-18 - The Greatest Commandments
The Old Testament contains many commandments or rules that the Hebrews were to obey. The Ten Commandments are probably the most well-known elements of the Law. Jesus was asked by one of the teachers of the Law to name the most important commandment. Jesus replied, "The most important one is this: Hear, O Israel, the Lord God , the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength. The second is this: Love your neighbor as yourself. There is no commandment greater than these." (Mark 12:29-31, NIV)
Today we are faced with numerous demands for our time and attention. We find ourselves inundated with information. We are busy with our jobs, our families, our churches, our hobbies, and our friends. What is to be our top priority in our hectic world?
Jesus' message to the teacher of the Law is just a relevant to us today. We should first love God with all our hearts, souls, minds, and strength. We then should also love our neighbors as ourselves. As we face situations that require us to make choices in our daily lives, we don't have to examine a rule book to decide how to act. We can follow these two simple principles to guide us.
