2012-01-24 - Ordinary Gifts
James 1:14 "Every good and perfect gift is from God above ."
As I mentioned earlier, for the last nearly seven weeks, we have had a rare Winter visitor, a female Hummingbird that we have named Pearl (she arrived on Pearl Harbor Day). Naturally this has been quite an exciting gift, and we tend to spend a lot of our free time enjoying watching her. But I realized last week, that we shouldn't overlook the beauty and specialness of our "regular" birds, such as the Downy Woodpeckers, Cardinals and the perky and tame Chipping Sparrows. Likewise on a recent excursion to a wildlife refuge, while we were thrilled by the uniquely splendid Roseate Spoonbills, we also enjoyed the "everyday beauty" of the literally thousands of Coots.
This brings to mind what can happen in our spiritual lives. Sometimes we tend to seek the flashy, and to become bored with our everyday spiritual lives. And boredom is the epitome of arrogance; how God must detest it - the attitude that something or someone He made isn't good or exciting enough for us. Just whom do we think we are?!
Sometimes we are guilty of being impressed by famous speakers and showy worship services, and we risk taking for granted the tremendous blessing of our own less flashy churches which are chock-full of devoted Christians, and overflowing with warm fellowship, solid teaching (which isn't always so, even in the flashier churches) and rewarding service. Or perhaps a man wishes his wife looked like a model, but is taking for granted the blessing of her simple, everyday support and devotion to his needs. Sadly, he may not realize just how valuable she is, until she's gone. Too often, we overlook the "ordinary" gifts of God in our lives, as we yearn for something more "spectacular" - but usually more shallow in the long run.
I encourage you to join me in asking God to keep our eyes and hearts open to appreciating his simple, everyday blessings, before it's too late.
