2012-01-20 - The Man Who Almost Had It All
In Luke 18:18-29, we find the story of the rich, young ruler who thought he had it all. Yet there was something missing in his life. So the young man approached Jesus, to find out how to obtain eternal life. Jesus explained that the ruler needed to obey the commandments. To this, the young man replied, "All these I have kept since I was a boy."
(Luke 18:21, NIV). Jesus then told him "You lack one thing, Sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in Heaven. Then come, follow me." (v. 22)
The rich, young ruler sadly walked away, because he didn't want to give up his great wealth. Jesus was asking the young fellow to become one of his disciples, but the ruler just couldn't do away with his riches to follow Jesus.
What is Jesus calling us to do today? What is he asking us to give up? What is keeping us from being committed disciples of Jesus?
