2011-12-26 - What Would a Shepherd Say?
Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord. (Luke 2:11)
Perhaps I was sleep-deprived, and what I thought was an angel really was a daydream. I thought I was told by an angel to find the Savior in a stable. The flock has been keeping us busy, and at times I and the other shepherds are not able to take a break, so maybe hunger and fatigue are to blame. No, it's real, for the other shepherds saw and heard a host of angels praising the Lord! Something this extraordinary does not happen to us every day. It took our breath away. We obeyed and went to find this redeemer.
Are we the first ones here, or has everyone come and gone to see this new addition? I wanted to look at the baby, such tiny features. I've seen babies before, and usually do not stare at them too long. This baby was different. He had all the characteristics and details of any newborn, but there was something else. I couldn't put my finger on it, but I knew there was something unique. His birth announcement alone should have been a clue.
Baby Jesus' eyes were shut. How could He sleep at a time like this? I must have been more tired than I realized. When I looked at Jesus a second time, I saw my face in His.
Lord, There are moments I wish I could go back to when I was a child, when there were no worries or responsibilities. I was safe from the outside world's influence, as Jesus experienced as a babe. I know I can't go back in time. Help make the life I lead now more bearable. I want my life to be consumed with You. In Jesus' name I pray, Amen.
