2011-11-12 - Patience ~ David
Last week we saw how King David exhibited a lack of patience. This week, we will look at how he did demonstrate incredible patience - with his predecessor, King Saul. While under Saul's reign, David was very successful at his military exploits. In fact, the people sang songs praising David's victories. King Saul became jealous of David. In 1 Samuel 18:10-12, we read where Saul threw a spear at David, attempting to kill him.
Even though David was aware of Saul's jealousy and murderous intents, David remained calm and patient. David continued to serve under Saul. Saul tried several times to kill David. But David remained true to Saul. In 1 Samuel 24, David had an opportunity to take take Saul's life. David, however, said, "The Lord forbid that I should do such a thing to my master, the Lord's anointed, or lift my hand against him; for he is the anointed of the Lord." (1 Samuel 24:6 NIV)
Why was David so patient? I think David's patience came from his trust and faith in God. Remember that the prophet Samuel had anointed David as the King of Israel (1 Samuel 16). David had been chosen for a great task, and he would await the Lord's timing.
What has God called you to do? Has He called you to wait patiently? Pray that God will grant us patience, as we serve Him.
