[CF Devotionals] 2011-11-10 - Ears Open

1 Tim 6:20 O Timothy, guard and keep the deposit entrusted [to you]! Turn away from the irreverent babble and godless chatter, with the vain and empty and worldly phrases, and the subtleties and the contradictions in what is falsely called knowledge and spiritual illumination. (AMP)

I was listening to a radio talk show one morning several years ago after a political speech. The radio show host admitted that he had gotten very excited about what he was hearing. He couldn't wait to pull down the text of the speech and go over it. As quickly as possible the pages were printed out and the pen was poised to make notes. As each line and paragraph was read they realized that the speaker had said - nothing. The words had been spoken with eloquence and authority, but they were empty words. There was no substance. Vain and empty worldly phrases.

Did you ever hear someone speaking and something just didn't quite ring right? You couldn't put your finger on it, but it was there. The longer you listen the more uncomfortable you became. It might have required talking with a friend to find the issue, but it was there. Subtleties and contradictions.

There are those who will diminish a truth because it is based upon a Christian foundation. People will not force their "beliefs" on someone else who does not believe the same way. What they are really saying is the truth that they believe in is somehow inferior. God is the source of truth. The world has cooked up a meal that is fed to the cultures of the world, and it is a lie wrapped in very subtle thoughts undermining truth. If there is absolute truth they are accountable to someone or something. Believers who present cogent defenses of points based on faith are at best ignored or tolerated. More often they are mocked because they believe in something so "outdated". Personal attacks rather than factual discussion. Falsely called knowledge and spiritual illumination.

Any yet we are told to occupy until the Lord returns. Two and two has been four for a very long time. Perhaps we should reexamine that. How ridiculous is that statement? While we are not bound to the law as believers the Ten Commandments are still true. Don't commit murder. That one is still generally accepted. Though I recently heard - in the future no child will even be named until they are thirty days old and may be terminated within that time period if there are sufficient medical reasons to do so. This was all couched in terms of sustainability. This is the idea of living within what they earth can provide. This well-educated individual is advocating murder and establishing grounds to make it acceptable. Unthinkable, but true. Today most of his contemporaries roll their eyes. But a lie told often enough will begin to sound like the truth. A lie held within reasonable sounding goals is still a lie.

Know what you believe. Listen carefully. Speak the truth in love. Some are still listening. The Holy Spirit still calls to men and women today. We who believe are witnesses to that fact as we were called.

Grace & Peace,
Mike
