[CF Devotionals] 2011-10-27 - Truth for More Than This Life

1 Corinthians 15:19-20 If we have hoped in Christ in this life only, we are of all men most to be pitied. 20 But now Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who are asleep. (NASB)

Have you ever been called a fool because you believe in Christ?

There is the pain of rejection by the person with who you were speaking. Even more difficult, maybe it was a friend. There is the disappointment that they could not, or would not, consider the good news you have to offer could possibly be true when you know the truth in your heart of hearts.

The truth is no different because someone will not accept it. The sound barrier was once thought to be unbreakable. Many scientists, engineers and test pilots worked on this problem for years. Some died in the attempt. If we could count the number of times they were told it was impossible we might all shake our heads in disbelief at their lack of vision - as those who reject the gospel shake their heads at us.

The lie was that the sound barrier was something that could not be exceeded. It was easy and maybe even comfortable to live within those limits. The lie was shown to be what it was one day. If Christ was not raised from the dead then the world is not ultimately accountable for its actions to anyone. The idea that truth firm and fixed stands on shaky ground. The accepted truth was that mach one was a barrier. Reality was quite different.

Which was the truth?

Science and mathematics deals with formulas and graphs. These are truths. Apply these truths to problems and solutions are often found using physics and calculus. Christianity deals with truth. There is a difference. If Jesus was not raised from the dead then we live a lie thinking we have truth. We are indeed in a pitiable state. If Jesus sits at the right hand of His Father in Heaven then this is a truth that will extend beyond this life and death itself has been defeated.

One day this world and the fallen creation will be destroyed with great heat. A new heaven and earth will come into being. Will two plus two still equal four? I'm not sure. But I know beyond a shadow of a doubt that Christ will be there with His Father and the Holy Spirit. That is a truth for all time and beyond. Jesus called Himself the Way, the Truth and the Life. God will continue be the source and foundation of all truth as He has always been.

Take comfort and strength in that. Selah.

Lord Jesus - Settle Your truth into our hearts and minds as encouragement against a world that doesn't to hear the good news they so desparately need.

Grace & Peace,
Mike
