[CF Devotionals] 2011-07-04 - The Big Blue A

I don’t know about you, but before I eat at a restaurant, I want to know their health rating. I know it’s not a guarantee, but it can be an indication of cleanliness, healthiness etc. In some restaurants, the ratings are prominently displayed, while at others, it’s like finding a needle in the proverbial haystack. On a recent trip to South Carolina, Richard and I were delighted to find that in that state, restaurants are required to post their grades boldly by the door. So you can just drive by and decide whether you want to eat there. We easily fell into the habit of looking for those beautiful big blue As posted on the doorways.

I was wondering how we’d feel, if God graded us spiritually, and posted our grade on our doorway or car, for all to see. Though of course, our salvation isn’t based on works, our lifestyle and habits – prayer, Bible study, active participation in a local church, using our gifts to help others etc. – do indicate the condition of our hearts, and the state of our relationship with our Lord.

God does want to search our hearts, and to help us repent and get back on track, when it's needed.

Psalm 139:23-24 (The Message)
Investigate my life, O God,
find out everything about me;
Cross-examine and test me,
get a clear picture of what I'm about;
See for yourself whether I've done anything wrong —
then guide me on the road to eternal life.

Fortunately He doesn’t announce our heart’s condition to the world. But wherever we are – literally or otherwise – we need to regularly ask God to examine our hearts and help us stay or get back on target spiritually. Let's pray for God to help us live our lives in a way that would would earn a "Big Blue A."
