2011-06-11 - Mary and Martha
In Luke 10:38-42, we find a brief account of two sisters and their reaction to a visit from Jesus. Martha was eager to attend to the needs of Jesus. She opened her house to him. She was busy with "all the preparations that had to be made" for Jesus' visit. Martha probably cleaned and swept the house. She prepared the table for a special meal. Martha undoubtedly spent time fixing the feast. Martha was so busy with the details, that she complained to Jesus that her sister "has left me to do the work by myself." Martha said, "Tell her to help me."
Jesus' response showed Martha where her priorities should have been. Jesus said, "Martha, Martha, you are worried and upset about many things, but only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her." (Luke 10:41-42, NIV) Martha had lost sight of the fact that the Messiah was in their presence.
How often do we get wrapped up in the details of life - and forget the important matters? Do we lose our focus when everyday pressures mount? Do we keep our eyes on our Lord and Savior?
