2011-03-08 - Ladybugs
Colossians 3:1-2 (The Message) "So if you're serious about living this new resurrection life with Christ, act like it. Pursue the things over which Christ presides. Don't shuffle along, eyes to the ground, absorbed with the things right in front of you. Look up, and be alert to what is going on around Christthat's where the action is. See things from his perspective."
On a recent visit to my father's church, my husband and I really wanted to be attentive not only because God's word tells us to - but also because the pastor was returning to the pulpit for the first time since his cancer sugery. I did take fairly good notes, but it wasn't easy, because we were being inundated by ladybugs! They were hopping around my hair, our necks, the pews, you name it! We did our best to still listen, but the ladybugs were definitely a distraction. They may be cute, but they are still bugs!
Sometimes we have ladybugs in our spiritual lives. We let a myriad of things distract us from our spiritual pursuits. Literal distractions abound when are in the midst of our "spiritual disciplines." Our minds stray during sermons, Bible study, music and prayer, to such ladybugs as our to-do lists, what we are having to eat for lunch, issues which are worrying us etc.
And then we also allow other ladybugs to pull us off focus in our everyday lives. We may get so caught up in career issues, achieving good grades, health or family issues, financial concerns (none of which are inherently wrong) or other concerns, that we allow ourselves to be consumed with something(s) other than Christ.
I encourage you to ask the Lord to help you find and deal with the ladybugs in your life.
