[CF Devotionals] 2010-05-24 - Parental Lessons from the Lord

The Good, the Bad, and the Godly ~ Part 17

The Bible gives examples of what a child's attitude should be toward his or her parents.

Honor your father and your mother, so you may have a long life. (Exodus 20:12, Deuteronomy 5:16)

Bring joy to parents, by being sensible and not foolish. (Proverbs 10:1, 17:21, 25)

Listen to your father, and don't despise your mother when she is older. (Proverbs 13:1, 8:32-33, 23:22)

Love your parents. (Luke 14:26)

Do not rob or cheat your parents. (Proverbs 28:24)

Accept discipline. (Proverbs 15:5)

Speak the truth, which makes a parent glad. (Proverbs 23:15-16) "My son, if your heart is wise, then my heart will be glad; my inmost being will rejoice, when your lips speak what is right."

These duties may be hard to swallow, especially if we haven't had the ideal upbringing. This got me to thinking, how do I treat my Heavenly Father? Do I treat Him with the same respect?

How can we do these things for the Lord of all creation? Again, the Bible tells us. Here are a few examples.

I can show my Father honor by my wealth, my body, and how I treat others. (Proverbs 3:9, 1 Corinthians 6:20, and Romans 12:10)

I can show my Father joy, when I make God my strength. (Habakkuk 3:18-19)

When I listen to my Father, He knows me, and I follow Him. (Luke 10:27)

I can show my Father love, when I love others as I love myself. (Leviticus 19:18)

When I am generous to the less fortunate, I am giving back to my Father. (Proverbs 19:17) "He who is kind to the poor lends to the LORD, and he will reward him for what he has done."

When I accept His discipline, I know, without a doubt, that I am His. (Hebrews 12:5-6) "My son, do not make light of the Lord's discipline, and do not lose heart when he rebukes you, because the Lord disciplines those he loves, and he punishes everyone he accepts as a son."

When I am honest, I am obeying my Father. (Deuteronomy 25:14-16) "Do not have two differing measures in your house—one large, one small. You must have accurate and honest weights and measures, so that you may live long in the land the LORD your God is giving you. For the LORD your God detests anyone who does these things, anyone who deals dishonestly."

Lord, You have done so much for us. Thank You for making us Your children. There is a lot of information in the Bible on our role as children. It is a lot to digest. Help me use the Bible as a guide to my behavior. In Jesus' name I pray, Amen.
