2008-09-21 - Ruth: Arranged Marriages
Installment 24 ~ Chapter 3, Part 2
We had left Ruth and Naomi eating dinner. and talking about how God had been blessing them. We will now see how Ruth, based on what God had been doing, began to take some action herself. We constantly hear God helps those who help themselves, but I havent found that verse in scripture. But we do see throughout scripture that receiving Gods blessings does involve our involvement, and not just waiting for something to happen. The best example I can think of relates to our call to make disciples. While we are to live in expectation of the Lords return, which can happen at any moment, at the same time, we are to be working for Him.
Verses 1-5: It appears that some time may have passed since Naomis question from the previous chapter. How much isnt clear. But Naomi is concerned over the conditions under which she has been living. Both women are concerned about each others welfare. This is love.
I guess Naomi had seen Fiddler on the Roof, because it appears she is taking on the role of matchmaker. Keep in mind that arranged marriages are frequently the norm in this Middle Eastern culture. Remember Abraham
I want you to swear by the LORD, the God of Heaven and the God of Earth, that youwill not get a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I am living, but will go to my country and my own relatives and get a wife for my sonIsaac (Genesis 24:3-4).
To be continued.
