2008-09-19 - Joy
I have never thought of celebration as a spiritual discipline until I read a book on spiritual disciplines. For the people of Israel, God instituted several celebrations, or feasts. Even the Lord's Supper is a celebration of sorts. I love to eat but I'm not a big celebration person. Come to think of it I'm not even all that joyful. I often lean more towards witty sarcasm than cheerful rejoicing. I need to work on it.
Psalms 118:24 This is the day which the LORD hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.
Today this very day is the day that God has made. Whether it rains or shines, whether it is hot or cold, no matter what happens - it is a day God made. I must willfully choose to rejoice in it.
According to 2005 CIA statistics, 155,000 people die each day. I am not one of them. God, thank you for another day of life. 854 million go to bed hungry each night. I am not one of them. God, thank you for providing for me today.
Often times my prayer time is just a to do list for God. "God help this person and that. Help with this thing and that. Do this other thing and oh yeah I really need you to do such and such for me today. Thanks - you the man." Today, I will still make petitions of him I know but I will be deliberate to rejoice in all the small miracles. Today is the day God has made.
