2008-06-09 - Joseph: Like Father Like
Son
Through faith, Joseph was granted his dying wish. (Genesis 50:22, Joshua
24:32, Hebrews 11:22)
"'By faith, Joseph, when his end was near, spoke about
the exodus of the Israelites from Egypt, and gave instructions about his
bones." (Hebrews 11:22 NIV)
On Joseph's deathbed, at the age of 110, he prophesied that the Israelites
would indeed leave Egypt, and gave instructions on how he was to be buried,
just as his father Jacob had done.
It took centuries for Joseph's request to be fulfilled. The Israelites brought
Joseph's bones with them from Egypt, and when they finally arrived in the
Promised Land, Joseph was buried among his ancestors.
Despite the fact Joseph didn't live to see his request fulfilled, he was
optimistic about it coming true. He had no reason to believe that God wouldn't
come through with His promise of bringing Abraham's descendants into the
Promised Land.
What if Joseph knew it was going to take that long? Would it have swayed
his faith? If you found out you would never see what you have been hoping
for, how would you feel? How would you hide your disappointment? Joseph didn't
feel he missed the opportunity to actually see the rich, resourceful land
with his Earthly eyes. It was enough for Joseph, to know it would happen
one day.
Lord, I don't want a lack of faith in my life. Please
help me to have authentic faith in You. Please help me not to be discouraged,
and to not lose trust, when things don't turn out the way I want them to.
In Jesus' name I pray, Amen.
