2008-03-25 - Stormy Seas
Mark 4:37-41 And there arose a great storm of wind, and
the waves beat into the ship, so that it was now full. 38 And
he was in the hinder part of the ship, asleep on a pillow: and they awake
him, and say unto him, Master, carest thou not that we perish? 39
And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still.
And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. 40 And he said
unto them, Why are ye so fearful? how is it that ye have no faith?
41 And they feared exceedingly, and said one to another, What manner
of man is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?
When troubles come in my life I like to think about this passage or one of
the other storm passages - Matthew 14:22-23, Mark 6:47-52, John 6:16-21.
I just find a lot of comfort knowing that Jesus can save me from the storms
of my life as surely as he saved the Apostles from the storms in their lives.
I am grateful that none of these stories is a story of an easy excursion
across the sea. It is good for me to see that even Jesus' handpicked dozen
had problems in their life. Storms come up in every life.
The question that comes to my mind time and time again is this, "Where is
my faith?" Do I believe in the storm or the creator of weather and all things?
Do I put my trust in the adversity or in the one who conquered even death?
When I worry about the problems, tremble at the trials, or shake in fear
during the storms, it is because I believe in the power of those things.
I give them the power to control my life but all power and all authority
comes from God and God alone. He is the one whom I should place my faith
in.
What about you? Do you place your faith in the storms or in the Savior?
Psalm 18:2 (TNIV) The LORD is my rock, my fortress and
my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield [a] and
the horn [b] of my salvation, my stronghold.
Psalm 28:7 (TNIV) The LORD is my strength and my shield;
my heart trusts in him, and he helps me. My heart leaps for joy, and with
my song I praise him.
Psalm 119:114 (TNIV) You are my refuge and my shield;
I have put my hope in your word.
