2008-03-17 - What Do I Need with the
Armor of God?
Part 5 - The Shield of Faith
"In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith,
with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one." (Ephesians
6:16 NIV)
The fourth piece of our armor is the shield of faith. It covered a solider's
full armor, offering full protection against the fiery darts of Satan. What
do your darts look like? Impatience? Doubt? Low self-esteem? In order for
life's darts to miss us, we have to hold up our faith in the Lord.
In Psalm 59, David tells about his time on the run from King Saul. David
wasn't seeking help from men, weapons, or his own strength. He was looking
to the Lord to deliver him. This faith in God was the same faith that helped
him stand against a giant that others were not willing to face. (See
1
Samuel 17:31-51) Like David, we too can know that God will intervene
when our lives seem to be unraveling. All we need is faith--but that's not
as easy as it sounds, at times.
Faith is not something tangible. We cannot purchase it at a convenience store
or online. It's a belief that God, our Creator, is powerful enough to be
trusted to do what's best on our behalf. "For the Lord
God is our sun and our shield. He gives us grace and glory. The Lord will
withhold no good thing from those who do what is right." (Psalm 84:11
NLT)
Lord, Today I pray the words of David. You are my strength.
I will sing praises, for You are my defense and my shield. In Jesus' name
I pray, Amen. (Psalm 59:11, 17)
