2007-06-30 - Sazo

Psalm 4:8, "I will lie down and sleep in peace, for you alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety."

There is a device in England called the Sazo. The full name is the Verify Location Sazo. It has been out for about two years, and is becoming more and more popular with parents. The Sazo has a GPS (Global Positioning System), which allows parents to track their children, who carry the device, to within a few feet of where they are. A mobile phone or a computer can check it. It can make and receive phone calls, has a panic button, and can even notify the monitors, if the person carrying it exceeds certain speed limits when driving, or crosses certain boundaries that have been set. It is fairly inexpensive, 100 British Pounds (@ $200USD), and has a monthly fee of about 10 pounds. Honestly, this is every kid's nightmare.

However, many of us are safety conscious, and I would only encourage us to all be so.But in the end, all our safety measures cannot match the One who keeps all things under his eye, hears all the creepy noises, and knows from where they emanate. "Does he who implanted the ear not hear? Does he who formed the eye not see?" (Psalm 94:9) The Lord is really our best insurance. We see it all over Scripture. The Lord protects His people. He looks lovingly upon those whom He loves. Even His common grace extends to those who mock Him, and deny both His power and authority. For all of us who seek to lie down and sleep in peace, the Lord is the One who makes us, says the Psalmist, "lie down in green pastures," Psalm 23:1, and sleep in peace. We find our safest safety in the Lord. We find peaceful peace in the matchless love of Jesus Christ. The sleep the Lord gives is the siesta of siestas.

Happy is the man or woman who, lying down to rest, does so with a clear conscience. The quiet nature of peaceful sleep comes from having our hearts renewed by the Holy Spirit. Faith unequaled, resting rest, and blissful joy all come from the new nature given the follower of Christ in His mercy. Many struggle with sleep, and often find that their sleep is not peaceful. It is possible that this comes from an uneasy conscience, and it would be unfaithful to not admit that. However, the struggle to obtain peaceful sleep is not necessarily an indication of a conscience that is pricked. There can be physical reasons why we struggle with sleep that are due to numerous health, work, even mental circumstances or cycles that many of us go through. Many long for that lying down in peaceful rest, and it eludes them. Please don't take from this that I am saying that elusive sleep is always the result of a spiritual condition. It can be, but there are often other factors. My point is that the sleep of peace is best obtained and maintained in the Lord's mercy.

One day we will know safety and peace, as we can never experience it here on Earth. As we go to the bed and hope to rise in the morning, so one day, we will go to the grave and await the resurrection. For the follower of Christ, this will be the truest peaceful sleep they have ever known. It is sleep in Christ. By God's grace, may we all, while He tarries in His return - if we sleep this sleep - do so peacefully, safely, having rested in Christ.
