2006-10-30 - The List
"So what's on your list?" Susan asked me while waiting at a stoplight. "Huh?"
I wondered. I hated to appear unintelligent to my newfound roommate. Susan
went on to explain how she had a set of written guidelines on the type of
things she was looking for in a husband. For her, the potential male had
to have a sense of humor and adore traveling. Oh, and had to be a Christian.
But that is a given, right? That goes without saying. Then, as an 18-year-old
girl, the particulars in what I wanted in any long-term mate had not entered
my mind enough to write them down. I knew I didn't want to limit God - but
a man who didn't have a pet iguana would be nice.
When thinking of the ideal mate, you may come up with a list of the person's
specific hair color, to the presence of tattoos, but there is more to be
concerned with than physical characteristics. Your tastes and attractions
are known and are important to God. After all, He understands what type of
person you will be drawn to. "Before I shaped you in the
womb, I knew all about you. Before you saw the light of day, I had holy plans
for you." (Jeremiah 1:5 Amp)
Likewise there are standards that can't be compromised. As a Christian, you
should not be with a non-believer, someone who doesn't have a personal
relationship with Jesus. "Do not be yoked together with
unbelievers. For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or
what fellowship can light have with darkness?" (2 Corinthians 6:14 NIV)
Don't think it will be a breeze when you find that "Christian" person either.
You are still in a battle, as there is the pressure of human flesh to contend
with. It's no use searching to find a super Christian, the one with a large
S used as a fashion emblem - because God is there to encourage you. He can
be trusted to provide a way out from falling into temptation.
Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power.
Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the
devil's schemes." (Ephesians 6:10-11 NIV)
Lord, Show me what types of qualities I need to be the
mate you've created me to be. In Jesus' name I pray, Amen.
