2005-02-05 - Purpose
Hello my Dear Friends,
Today I want to talk to you about Purpose.
We are all faced with the question "Why am I here?" or "Do I have a Purpose?"
How do we find out what our purpose is for life?
To answer these questions, we need to think outside the box a bit.
Lets use a table lamp for an example. There is a purpose and design for making
a table lamp. Does the table lamp know its purpose? It was never told its
purpose; it was just made and put on the sales floor, and then eventually
bought by someone and put into the service of lighting up a room.
What's the only way the table lamp can know its true purpose? It would have
to speak to the designer and ask, "Why was I created?"
Most people, and even many Christians today, don't know their purpose in
life. Ultimately we all seek to know our purpose and want to be fulfilled
in it. We find the need to answer those questions, to have a purpose in our
lives - and so most of us just make up a purpose for ourselves. It might
be to be the best that you can be at something, like a hobby or a job. The
only way that we can know our purpose in life is to go to our Creator. If
we look in God's word, we can find that we indeed have a purpose.
You might say, "why would God create someone like me, with all the flaws
that I have?" It's because He knows the struggles you are going to go through,
He knows the mistakes you have made and will make. He wants to be there to
bring you through the trials and tribulations, and to take joy in you. He
wants to hold you in His arms, to hold you by the hand, and to lead you through
each one as parents leads their children.
Revelation says "You (God) created everything, and it
is for your pleasure that they exist and were created." Rev. 4:11b (NLT)
It says that we were created for God's pleasure.
I got a glimpse of the meaning of this when I got to keep Ebby, the kitty
that I rescued.
If you have a pet, or if you have children, have you ever just taken pleasure
in them? I loved watching Ebby grow up, I loved to see him learn new things,
and loved to guide him in learning to do things that he should and shouldn't
do. Show him where is food is when it's time to eat, and then watch him go
and find his food when it's time to eat. Sometimes when Ebby is sleeping,
I like to look at his body and watch for his breathing in and out.
I take pleasure in his life.
My friend, God's word tells us that's why we were created. We were created
for God's pleasure. He didn't create us because He was alone; He has the
trinity within the Godhead.
God created us for His pleasure.
Ephesians 2:10 (NIV) says "For we are God's workmanship,
created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God has prepared in advance
for us to do."
Your purpose is that you were made to please God by doing good works which
He has prepared in advance for you to do. And you do it just by being you,
and by loving Him. He loves to watch you, and loves to see you go through
life, just like I love to see Ebby go through life.
He loves to communicate with you and see that you care about Him. He chose
you first, before the foundations of the world, creating you in His image.
He knew when He created man, that man would fall and that He would have to
send His only Son Jesus to be a sin offering for whosoever would believe
in Him, so that you and I may be restored to him, and have our sin debt paid
in full - so that we can be in His presence eternally.
You see, you were created for His pleasure, to live with Him eternally. That
is your purpose. That's why if you are saved, He is preparing a place for
you in Heaven.
Did you know that When Adam and Eve were kicked out of the Garden of Eden
it was because God loved them and He wanted them to live forever with Him?
You see, had God not put Adam and Eve out of the Garden of Eden, they would
have eaten of the tree of Life and obtained immortality. Unfortunately, there
would have been no opportunity to save man at that point, because they were
then eternal beings and because of their sin, they would be eternally separated
from God. Their being put out of the Garden was God's love and grace.
So you see, the answer is: God made you for His good pleasure, and He loves
you so much that he protected you for himself and wants to save you for His
own pleasure. He loves to watch and fellowship with you, in an intimate
relationship, in your daily life.
My friend, without Jesus, you will never know the purpose of your life. He
is the one that made you. So if you don't know Jesus as your Lord and Savior,
and want to know Him and the purpose of your life, then please e-mail myself
or one of the other devotional authors.
May God bless you, my dear friends.
In Christ,
Rob
