Since Mother's Day is Sunday, let's check out some of what God's Word has
to say about mothers. I hope all you mothers have a blessed Mother's Day,
and for you mothers who are having a difficult time, I send a prayer up for
(Exo 20:12 NRSV) Honor your father and your mother, so
that your days may be long in the land that the LORD your God is giving
(Prov 23:22 NRSV) Listen to your father who begot you,
and do not despise your mother when she is old.
(Prov 20:20 NRSV) If you curse father or mother, your
lamp will go out in utter darkness.
(1 Tim 5:4 NASB) But if any widow has children or
grandchildren, let them first learn to practice piety in regard to their
own family, and to make some return to their parents; for this is acceptable
in the sight of God.
(Mat 12:48-50 NRSV) But to the one who had told him this,
Jesus replied, "Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?"
49 And pointing to his disciples, he said, "Here are my mother
and my brothers! 50 For whoever does the will of my Father
in heaven is my brother and sister and mother."
(1 Kings 3:23-27 NASB) Then the king said, "The one says,
'This is my son who is living, and your son is the dead one'; and the other
says, 'No! For your son is the dead one, and my son is the living one.'"
24 And the king said, "Get me a sword." So they brought a
sword before the king. 25 And the king said, "Divide the
living child in two, and give half to the one and half to the other."
26 Then the woman whose child was the living one spoke to
the king, for she was deeply stirred over her son and said, "Oh, my lord,
give her the living child, and by no means kill him." But the other said,
"He shall be neither mine nor yours; divide him!" 27 Then
the king answered and said, "Give the first woman the living child, and by
no means kill him. She is his mother."
(2 Tim 1:5 NRSV) I am reminded of your sincere faith,
a faith that lived first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice
and now, I am sure, lives in you.
