Matthew 6:20-21 But lay up for yourselves treasures in
heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not
break through nor steal:
For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.
My mother-in-law frequents thrift shops. Sometimes she surprises me with
old French textbooks, which I collect. She has told me that many families
take their deceased loved ones' material goods to stores such as Goodwill,
and that it is interesting to see what people collect, which type of books
are in their libraries etc. You can tell a lot about someone's life by what
they leave behind.
When you leave this world, what will people find when they clean out your
house? Will they find beloved family pictures and heirlooms, sentimental
treasures that evidence a love of family? Lots of trashy novels or R-rated
movies that show you filled your mind with junk food of the heart? Exercise
equipment, books and videos, that manifest your fitness aspirations? Libraries
full of books, demonstrating your never-ending quest to learn? Bibles, study
guides, concordances, Christian books that indicate a desire to learn more
about God's word?
Take a mental (or literal) inventory of your "stuff." If someone who didn't
know you, walked through your house, would they come away believing Christ
is your Lord, and seeing your love of Him and others? If not, what do you
need to change, to make this true?
