2003-11-10 - To Know the Lord
Encore 1998-09-22
Hosea 6:3, Then we will know, if we follow on to
know the Lord.
Knowledge is a duty. To know our Lord is the duty of every professing follower
of Him. To be without knowledge of our Lord and our faith is not a good thing.
Im not talking about philosophical knowledge of God, as an almighty
being, or the creator of all things, or knowledge of His holiness, or that
He is righteous in all He does. Such a knowledge of Him alone would simply
lead to dread, or fear.
The great thing for us to know about God is that we can be restored and
reconciled to Him. He is willing, even now, to be our friend. In Christ we
have the testimony and confirmation that He is willing to have mercy upon
us. It may slow you down for a second, but I would like you to read the following
quote by William Jay at least twice, I think it is very profound.
God in nature, is God above me; God in providence, is God beyond me;
God in law, is God against me; but God in Christ, is God for me and with
me.
This is profound because there are many ways one could know God. But there
is only one way that we can know a God who is for us, and with us. That is
to know God in Christ.
Would you like to know more of God? Would you like to fellowship with Him
deeper? If so there really are just a couple of things you need to do. With
diligence; read Scripture, listen to faithful preaching of the Word of God,
meditate on both, and above all, pray to the Father of lights. Pray according
to His promise:
If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God,
that gives to all men generously, and reproaches not; and it shall be given
him. James 1:5
Im not going to pretend that knowing God is easy. Getting to know God
is consuming. Getting to know a personal God is a process that will take
the rest of your life. But what would you rather do with your life?
I am aware that there is a new TV fall line-up of shows coming up soon, (maybe
it is here). Im not one to sing the evils of TV, but rather, I would
make a suggestion...Go to another room, where there is no TV, and read for
a while, pray for a while. It may mean giving up a show you like, or are
curious about, but knowing God is worth the sacrifice and in the end, (Ill
stake my life on it), you will find it is no sacrifice at all. It will be
to you a blessing.
Soli Deo Gloria,
