2 Cor 5:21 He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him. (NAS)
Jesus willingly left the glory of Heaven and put on our humanity. He hid His omnipotent self in the form of a baby. He lived, bathed, sweat, ate, laughed, cried and experienced all of the good and bad of our days. He hungered, got tired, suffered aches and pains. He likely scraped His knees and was comforted by His Mother. Jesus was picked on by other kids, worked hard, was misunderstood with the very best of intentions. He did all of these things - willingly.
As the Son, Jesus submitted Himself to the will of the Father. As the Creator of the Universe He did not have to endure any of this life, good or bad. He is eternal and self-sufficient with the Father and the Spirit. At a whim Jesus could clothe Himself in the very stars, or the most amazing clothing beyond our wildest imaginations. But He did come to Earth to live this life - willingly.
When the mob came for Jesus in the garden, it was Jesus Who tumbled them all like bowling pins and miraculously healed the ear of one of His would be captors. At the illegal trial before Chief Priests none of His accusers could make their testimony agree against Jesus. Jesus never defended Himself. When He spoke the truth, He was condemned. At Jesus' trial before Pilate, the Roman Procurator could find no fault in the Accused. Jesus again offered no defense. Yet, in fear of the crowd Pilate washed his hands of the matter and turned Jesus over to the people. The guiltless Jesus suffered all 39 lashes with multi-lashed whips with bone and rocks tied into the lashes - and miraculously lived through it. He carried His cross to Calvary gravely wounded and bleeding while the crowd cursed Him, ripped out His beard, beat Him and taunted Him to show His power.
All the while he was showing His power before their eyes and they were missing it. All the while Jesus was in control of every atom, breath, heart beat and action that would take place. He had the power to stop it all with a thought and the power of His will, but allowed it to continue - willingly.
The created being Lucifer took on the Creator Jesus and believed he could win. When Jesus had come to this earth, and lived our life - good and bad, stood in our stead at the trials, and took on our punishment carrying our sin - willingly. He led the enemy of our souls into an ambush beyond his wildest vision, and crushed the power of sin and death. Jesus knew no sin. He had never sinned nor had sin held any power over Him. He willingly accepted our sin - past, present and future - and destroyed it. His resurrection demonstrated the defeat of Death. And Jesus will share His victory and sinless life with anyone who asks with a repentant heart - willingly.
1 Peter 2:21-25 For you have been called for this purpose, since Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example for you to follow in His steps, 22 who committed no sin, nor was any deceit found in His mouth; 23 and while being reviled, He did not revile in return; while suffering, He uttered no threats, but kept entrusting Himself to Him who judges righteously; 24 and He Himself bore our sins in His body on the cross, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness; for by His wounds you were healed. 25 For you were continually straying like sheep, but now you have returned to the Shepherd and Guardian of your souls. (NAS)
Give us eyes to see Your power masked in your reserve and suffering. Give us ears to hear the bones of sin and death crushed under Your feet. And hearts to know that You have been victorious over both so that we will never have to fear either or any condemnation as Your children. Amen.
Grace & Peace,
