2003-04-27 - Passages about Music
Encore from 2000-07-02
One gift with which God blessed us is the gift of music. Of all the activities
in which I am privileged to participate at my church, singing in the choir
is my favorite. But even if - as the saying goes - we can carry a tune only
in a bucket - any time we sing to Him or in His honor, it is melodious to
the ears of our Heavenly Father. Today we will read several passages in God's
word that speak about music:
God considers music so vital that in ancient Israel, He assigned people
specifically to that ministry:
1 Chron 6:31 These are the men David put in charge of
the music in the house of the LORD after the ark came to rest there.
32 They ministered with music before the tabernacle, the Tent
of Meeting, until Solomon built the temple of the LORD in Jerusalem. They
performed their duties according to the regulations laid down for them. (NIV)
Music is to be a regular part of our worship in our local church, and aren't
we especially blessed today, to have Praise Songs-many of which are based
on the Psalms mentioned below!
Eph. 5:19 Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and
spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord. (NIV)
Psa. 149:3 Let them praise his name with dancing and make
music to him with tambourine and harp. 4 For the LORD takes delight
in his people; he crowns the humble with salvation. (NIV)
Psa. 43:4 Then will I go to the altar of God, to God,
my joy and my delight. I will praise you with the harp, O God, my God. (NIV)
Music is emotionally and mentally replenishing:
1 Sam. 16:23 Whenever the spirit from God came upon Saul,
David would take his harp and play. Then relief would come to Saul; he would
feel better, and the evil spirit would leave him. (NIV)
I hope you will join me in thanking God for His gift of music, and sing a
song to Him today.
