Part 2: Mary, the sister of Martha
Today we will read passages about Mary, the sister of Martha and Lazarus.
Mary's is an excellen role model in the areas of personal worship and priorites
(Luke 10), as well as obedience and belief in Christ's power (John 11). For
those of you who are new subscribers: In our Sunday devotionals (Sent Saturday
evenings EST, USA time), we present passages with little comment, rather
letting the Bible speak for itself.
Luke 10:39-41 (NASB) She had a sister called Mary,
who was seated at the Lordâs feet, listening to His word.
Butt Martha was distracted with all her preparations; and she came up to
Him and said, Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to do all
the serving alone? Then tell her to help me. But the Lord answered and said
to her, Martha, Martha, you are worried and bothered about so many things.
But only one thing is necessary, for Mary has chosen the good part, which
shall not be taken away from her.
John 11:2 a (NRSV) Mary was the one who anointed the Lord
with perfume and wiped his feet with her hair.
John 11:28-33 (NRSV) When she had said this, she
went back and called her sister Mary, and told her privately, The Teacher
is here and is calling for you. And when she heard it, she got up quickly
and went to him. Now Jesus had not yet come to the village, but was still
at the place where Martha had met him. The Jews who were with her in the
house, consoling her, saw Mary get up quickly and go out. They followed her
because they thought that she was going to the tomb to weep there.
When Mary came where Jesus was and saw him, she knelt at his feet and said
to him, Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.
