2002-08-15 - The Trouble with
Reruns
Lam 3:22-23 The Lord's lovingkindnesses indeed never cease,
For His compassions never fail. 23 They are new every morning;
Great is Thy faithfulness. (NAS)
At my house there are some serious fans of Star Trek. Yesterday an episode
that many fans and non-fans are familiar with, The Trouble with Tribbles,
was aired. At first I jumped at the thought of this very funny story
being shown again. I've seen it dozens of times and laughed at the sarcasm,
the irony, a bar room brawl with bodies flying across tables and several
very amusing scenes with people explaining themselves about the fight and
the tribbles themselves.
Then I realized I had seen the episode dozens of times. While I'm sure I
will see it and enjoy it again it was not new enough. There were some other
things that I needed to do. This time it didn't hold my attention like it
had in the past.
But the love of God never fails. His kindness and mercy are new and fresh
every day. If we will stop long enough to pray and if we will let Him pour
them into our lives we can move a little further into understanding the depth
of the love that went to Calvary for us, the forgiveness that cleans the
repentant heart, and the fact that He is always with us and lives inside
us.
Take some time to go back to the foundational pieces of your faith and look
at them again. I believe you will find them just as fresh and powerful, maybe
more so, as the last time those topics crossed your mind. The simple things
of faith have tremendous depth. They reach into every facet of our faith.
It is easy to dismiss them as elementary, but they are the roots that hold
the tree firmly in the storm and the fabric on which the cross-stitched image
is woven. Without them the tree crashes to the ground or the thread
image is simply a ball of string.
Grace & Peace,
Mike
