2002-08-04 - Passages Related to
Self-Esteem
As we always do on Saturday nights, we present another devotional which is
simply passages (non-exhaustive). Much is said and observed about self-esteem
today, and it's easy to go off-track in either direction. Some people are
conceited, and many don't think as highly of themselves as God does. Here
are some passages that relate to what we should think of ourselves, and what
God thinks of us.
John 3:16 (Amplified Bible) For God so greatly loved and
dearly prized the world that He [even] gave up His only begotten (unique)
Son, so that whoever believes in (trusts in, clings to, relies on) Him shall
not perish (come to destruction, be lost) but have eternal (everlasting)
life.
Psalms 139:13-16 (Amplified Bible) For You did form my
inward parts; You did knit me together in my mother's womb. I will confess
and praise You for You are fearful and wonderful and for the awful wonder
of my birth! Wonderful are Your works, and that my inner self knows right
well. My frame was not hidden from You when I was being formed in secret
[and] intricately and curiously wrought [as if embroidered with various colors]
in the depths of the earth [a region of darkness and mystery]. Your eyes
saw my unformed substance, and in Your book all the days [of my life] were
written before ever they took shape, when as yet there was none of them.
1 John 1:1-3 (Amplified Bible) See what [an incredible]
quality of love the Father has given (shown, bestowed on) us, that we should
[be permitted to] be named and called and counted the children of God! And
so we are! The reason that the world does not know (recognize, acknowledge)
us is that it does not know (recognize, acknowledge) Him. Beloved, we are
[even here and] now God's children; it is not yet disclosed (made clear)
what we shall be [hereafter], but we know that when He comes and is manifested,
we shall [as God's children] resemble and be like Him, for we shall see Him
just as He [really] is. And everyone who has this hope [resting] on Him cleanses
(purifies) himself just as He is pure (chaste, undefiled, guiltless).
Romans 12:2-4 (NASB) For through the grace given to me
I say to everyone among you not to think more highly of himself than he ought
to think; but to think so as to have sound judgment, as God has allotted
to each a measure of faith.
