2002-06-16 - Passages Related to Fathers
Encore from 1998-06-21
I hope all of you fathers have a Happy Father's Day. For those of you experiencing pain related to your children, I pray for God's peace and a sense of His presence. Some of us were blessed with wonderful fathers; others had parents who failed to live up to what God intended them to be. But we all have a perfect Heavenly Father who loves us dearly. Today we will read passages related to spiritual and biological fathers.
(1 John 3:1 NNAS) See how great a love the Father has bestowed on us, that we would be called children of God; and such we are. For this reason the world does not know us, because it did not know Him.
(Rom 8:15-17 NNAS) For you have not received a spirit of slavery leading to fear again, but you have received a spirit of adoption as sons by which we cry out, "Abba! Father!" 16 The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are children of God, 17 and if children, heirs also, heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him so that we may also be glorified with Him.
(Mat 15:4-6 NNAS) For God said, 'HONOR YOUR FATHER AND MOTHER,' and, 'HE WHO SPEAKS EVIL OF FATHER OR MOTHER IS TO BE PUT TO DEATH.' 5 But you say, 'Whoever says to his father or mother, "Whatever I have that would help you has been given to God," 6 he is not to honor his father or his mother.' And by this you invalidated the word of God for the sake of your tradition.
(1 Tim 5:1 NNAS) Do not sharply rebuke an older man, but rather appeal to him as a father, to the younger men as brothers.
(Heb 12:9 NNAS) Furthermore, we had earthly fathers to discipline us, and we respected them; shall we not much rather be subject to the Father of spirits, and live?
(Eph 6:4 NNAS) Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.
(Col 3:21 NNAS) Fathers, do not exasperate your children, so that they will not lose heart.
