2002-05-19 - Passages about Rest
As is our usual habit, today's devotional simply presents passages on a topic,
with no commentary from us. On Sundays, we prefer to let the Bible speak
directly to our readers, with no input from us.
As someone who is just returning from a restful vacation, I have "rest" on
my mind. God provides several kinds of rest for us -- for spiritual, emotional
and physical rejuvenation. Today we will read some of what God's word has
to say about rest. All of today's passages are from The Amplified Bible.
Matthew 11:28-29 Come to Me, all you who labor and are
heavy-laden and overburdened, and I will cause you to rest. [I will ease
and relieve and refresh your souls.] Take My yoke upon you and learn of Me,
for I am gentle (meek) and humble (lowly) in heart, and you will find rest
(relief and ease and refreshment and recreation and blessed quiet) for your
souls.
Matthew 14:23 And after He had dismissed the multitudes,
He went up into the hills by Himself to pray. When it was evening, He was
still there alone.
Hebrews 4:1-3 Therefore, while the promise of entering
His rest still holds and is offered [today], let us be afraid [to distrust
it], lest any of you should think he has come too late and has come short
of [reaching] it. For indeed we have had the glad tidings [Gospel of God]
proclaimed to us just as truly as they [the Israelites of old did when the
good news of deliverance from bondage came to them]; but the message they
heard did not benefit them, because it was not mixed with faith (with the
leaning of the entire personality on God in absolute trust and confidence
in His power, wisdom, and goodness) by those who heard it; neither were they
united in faith with the ones [Joshua and Caleb] who heard (did believe).
For we who have believed (adhered to and trusted in and relied on God) do
enter that rest, in accordance with His declaration that those [who did not
believe] should not enter when He said, As I swore in My wrath, They shall
not enter My rest; and this He said although [His] works had been completed
and prepared [and waiting for all who would believe] from the foundation
of the world.
Psalm 23:1-2 THE LORD is my Shepherd [to feed, guide,
and shield me], I shall not lack. He makes me lie down in [fresh, tender]
green pastures; He leads me beside the still and restful waters. He refreshes
and restores my life (my self); He leads me in the paths of righteousness
[uprightness and right standing with Him--not for my earning it, but] for
His name's sake.
Psalms 16:8-9 I have set the Lord continually before me;
because He is at my right hand, I shall not be moved. Therefore my heart
is glad and my glory [my inner self] rejoices; my body too shall rest and
confidently dwell in safety.
