2001-07-29 - Passages About Justice
Sometimes the news story of a crime overwhelms us, and because of the heinous nature of the murder, rape, torture etc., we think or say, "There is no justice! He deserves to die for what he did!" But do we really want justice? I think not. I know I don't; God has given me bountifully more grace than I could ever deserve. After all, in God's eyes, we have all broken all the commandments.(see James 2:10). Since God is perfectly Holy, He cannot abide sin. But because of His deep love for us, He made the perfect provision, which fulfills both His necessity of justice and our forgiveness. Through the sacrifice of His blameless son Jesus, we can have an eternal relationship and home with Him. Today we will read some passages about God's justice.
God is our model for being just:
(Deu 32:4 NRSV) The Rock, his work is perfect, and all his ways are just. A faithful God, without deceit, just and upright is he.
While we have the gift of life on this Earth, we are to promote justice on this Earth, going to bat for the mistreated.
(Micah 6:8 NRSV) He has told you, O mortal, what is good; and what does the LORD require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?
But always we must stay in balance:
(Mat 23:23-28 NRSV) Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you tithe mint, dill, and cummin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faith. It is these you ought to have practiced without neglecting the others. You blind guides! You strain out a gnat but swallow a camel! Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you clean the outside of the cup and of the plate, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence. You blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup, so that the outside also may become clean. Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs, which on the outside look beautiful, but inside they are full of the bones of the dead and of all kinds of filth. So you also on the outside look righteous to others, but inside you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.
And one day God's perfect justice will reign over the entire world:
(Isa 9:7 NRSV) His authority shall grow continually, and there shall be endless peace for the throne of David and his kingdom. He will establish and uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time onward and forevermore. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will do this.
