[PC-USA] 2001-06-03 - Passages About Animals

As many of you know, our dog Pierre (a Brittainy / Cocker Spaniel mix) is like a member of our family. I admit I am an animal-lover, but I will let the Bible speak for itself today, as we look at some of what God has to say about animals. However, a sidenote of interest to me: When the Earth was Created, before the Fall, both mankind and animals ate only plants; the world was vegetarian.

Genesis 1:27-31 (RSV) So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. And God blessed them, and God said to them, "Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth and subdue it; and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the air and over every living thing that moves upon the earth." And God said, "Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit; you shall have them for food. And to every beast of the earth, and to every bird of the air, and to everything that creeps on the earth, everything that has the breath of life, I have given every green plant for food." And it was so. And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning, a sixth day.

Exodus 23:4-5 (NIV) If you come across your enemy's ox or donkey wandering off, be sure to take it back to him. If you see the donkey of someone who hates you fallen down under its load, do not leave it there; be sure you help him with it.

Exodus 23:10-11 (RSV) For six years you are to sow your fields and harvest the crops, but during the seventh year let the land lie unplowed and unused. Then the poor among your people may get food from it, and the wild animals may eat what they leave. Do the same with your vineyard and your olive grove.

Psa. 84:3 (RSV) Even the sparrow finds a home, and the swallow a nest for herself, where she may lay her young, at thy altars, O LORD of hosts, my King and my God.

Luke 12:6 (RSV) Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? And not one of them is forgotten before God.
