[PC-USA] 2001-05-20 - Passages About Balance

As I prepare to go on vacation for a week, I am reminded that God's blueprint for our lives includes balance in every area.

Balance in life in general:

Ecclesiastes 3:1-9 (RSV) For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven: a time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted; a time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up; a time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance; a time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing; a time to seek, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away; a time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak; a time to love, and a time to hate; a time for war, and a time for peace.

Balance in the discipline of children:

Ephesians 6:4 (RSV) Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.

Balance in confronting a fellow Christian:

Galations 6:1 (RSV) Brethren, if a man is overtaken in any trespass, you who are spiritual should restore him in a spirit of gentleness. Look to yourself, lest you too be tempted.

Balance regarding spiritual replenishment:

Matthew 14:22-23 (RSV) Then he made the disciples get into the boat and go before him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds. And after he had dismissed the crowds, he went up on the mountain by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone.

Balance in witnessing:

Matthew 10:13-14 (RSV) And if the house is worthy, let your peace come upon it; but if it is not worthy, let your peace return to you. And if any one will not receive you or listen to your words, shake off the dust from your feet as you leave that house or town.

Balance in habits:

1 Corinthians 6:12 (RSV) All things are lawful for me, but not all things are helpful. All things are lawful for me, but I will not be enslaved by anything.
