2001-04-01 - Passages about Humor
To me, one of God's most wonderful gifts to us is a sense of humor. In America
(I'm not certain about other countries), on April 1st we celebrate April
Fool's Day, when we play practical jokes on friends etc. I personally value
highly a sense of humor in a friend, a minister, etc. I think we also need
to be able to laugh at ourselves; that helps to keep us more humble. Today,
we will see some of what God's word has to say about humor.
Ecclesiastes 3:1-4 (NASB) There is an appointed time for
everything. And there is a time for every event under heaven A time to give
birth and a time to die; A time to plant and a time to uproot what is planted.
A time to kill and a time to heal; A time to tear down and a time to build
up. A time to weep and a time to laugh.
Luke 6:20-21 (NASB) And turning His gaze toward His disciples,
He began to say, Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of
God. Blessed are you who hunger now, for you shall be satisfied. Blessed
are you who weep now, for you shall laugh.
Proverbs 17:22 (NASB) A joyful heart is good medicine,
But a broken spirit dries up the bones.
Job 8:20-21 (NASB) Lo, God will not reject a man of
integrity, Nor will He support the evildoers. He will yet fill your mouth
with laughter And your lips with shouting.
Proverbs 14:13 (NASB) Even in laughter the heart may be
in pain, And the end of joy may be grief.
