God wants to be a part of every aspect of our lives, including our work.
We should perforom our work with the attitude of God as our Ultimate Boss,
doing it in service to God and for His glory. That includes volunteer work,
housework and if we are students, our studies -- which are our "work." We
will look at some of what God's word has to say about this subject. All
Scriptures are from the New American Standard Bible (NASB).
Colossians 3:22-24 Slaves, in all things obey those who
are your masters on earth, not with external service, as those who merely
please men, but with sincerity of heart, fearing the Lord. Whatever you do,
do your work heartily, as for the Lord rather than for men, knowing that
from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance. It is the Lord
Christ whom you serve.
Proverbs 24:33-34 A little sleep, a little slumber, A
little folding of the hands to rest, Then your poverty will come as a robber
And your want like an armed man.
1 Thessalonians 4:10a-12 But we urge you, brethren, to
excel still more, and to make it your ambition to lead a quiet life and attend
to your own business and work with your hands, just as we commanded you,
so that you will behave properly toward outsiders and not be in any need.
2 Thessalonians 3:7-9 For you yourselves know how you
ought to follow our example, because we did not act in an undisciplined manner
among you, nor did we eat anyone's bread without paying for it, but with
labor and hardship we kept working night and day so that we would not be
a burden to any of you; not because we do not have the right to this, but
in order to offer ourselves as a model for you, so that you would follow
our example.
2 Thessalonians 3:10-13 For even when we were with you,
we used to give you this order: if anyone is not willing to work, then he
is not to eat, either. For we hear that some among you are leading an
undisciplined life, doing no work at all, but acting like busybodies. Now
such persons we command and exhort in the Lord Jesus Christ to work in quiet
fashion and eat their own bread. But as for you, brethren, do not grow weary
of doing good.
Proverbs 31:10-15 An excellent wife, who can find? For
her worth is far above jewels. The heart of her husband trusts in her, And
he will have no lack of gain. She does him good and not evil All the days
of her life. She looks for wool and flax And works with her hands in delight.
She is like merchant ships; She brings her food from afar. She rises also
while it is still night And gives food to her household And portions to her
maidens.
