[Papercut Press Publishing] 1997-09-23 - Fought the Good Fight

Congress is a good thing to have. They do important things, like for example, 11 Years ago today, on September 23, 1986, when Congress passed legislation to make the Rose the official flower of the United States. I know my life is better for it. But while we are on events that have occurred on September 23, we might remember that on this day in 1779 Captain John Paul Jones of the ship Bonhomme Richard, said during a naval engagement, "I have not yet begun to fight." That is a great attitude for a Christian to have. Paul had it and we should also. We might even call it holy violence. What should we be violent for? Truth. As advocates for the truth of God's Word and the doctrines it teaches us, we must take every thought captive to that Word. Truth is ancient, Truth is unerring, Truth is spotless, Truth is triumphant. Many oppose Truth, but no one has ever deposed Truth. "The Word of the Lord abides for ever" (1 Peter 1:25)

Let us be clear what is meant by holy violence:

  1. Determination of Will

This is where we resolve to believe God's Truth and follow it. This means putting to death sin and wickedness and putting on Christ and His righteousness. (2 Corinthians 5:14-17) David says, I have sworn, and I will perform it, that I will keep Thy righteous ordinances." (Psalm 119:106). The Christian is resolved, come what will, heaven will be had.

  2. Vitality and Fervor of Affection

Affections are violent things in and of themselves."My soul thirsts for God, for the living God." (Psalm 42:2) The believers' affections long for Truth and for heaven. Yesterday when I was having lunch at work I mentioned to a Christian fellow-worker that the Christian artist Rich Mullins had died in a car crash. She responded, without missing a beat, "Well, then today he is having a good day." That is an understanding of and affection for heaven.

  3. Strength to Persevere

It is easy to talk about Truth, but it is not so easy to know Truth and apply it to our lives. It will take the rest of our lives to win this battle and we will all, hopefully, leave the battle fighting for God's Truth. We must operam navare (put forth all our strength), and pray to heaven for sustaining grace.

"If I speak what is false, I must answer for it; if truth, it will answer for me." Thomas Fuller

"Truth seldom goes without a scratched face." John Trapp

"Serve Christ; back Him; let His cause be your cause; give not an hairbreadth of truth away, for it is not yours but God's." Samuel Rutherford
