Westminster Theological Seminary 1997-07-29 - Paying Attention

Hebrew 2:1, "For this reason we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away."

July 29, 1958: Congress establishes the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. 39 years ago today, NASA, was established. A few weeks ago they sent a probe to Mars, and among other things found evidence of a "flood plain" on the planet. There is also, in 1947 in New Mexico, the reported finding of aliens that is being remembered this year as a fiftieth anniversary. Then there are movies like Contact, Men in Black, or the recent cable release of Independence Day from last year. Aliens, all over, and what if it is true? What if we are not alone in this universe? How does this affect my faith in Christ? How does the evangelical Christian retain faith in the Bible when aliens might exist? Easy! What if NASA finds evidence of life outside of our Earth? So what …!!

It changes not our relationship with Christ, nor God's revelation in the Bible. The Bible is a book of God's revelation to us, it is not about little or large green men with big or little heads. The Scriptures are personal to us and they do not deal specifically with what to do with aliens. If NASA concludes that there was once a civilization on Mars, which would not surprise me, (To get more funding), my mission in life is the same, trust God and seek His face. My Bible does not seem mention the recent killing spree by Andrew Cunanan, my Bible seems not to have much to say about when the next major earthquake will occur and more importantly where, but these things matter not. What matters is what the Bible does say, and it says that God is a loving God to His children, it says "For the eyes of the Lord move to and fro throughout the earth that He may strongly support those whose heart is completely His … (2 Chronicles 16:9)" Therefore, if NASA finds aliens, bring them on, the more the merrier, I will trust my Lord and believe He is big enough to have other worlds and still be my personal Lord and Saviour. We are to live our lives to the glory of God, and if aliens exist, well, they can join us in our task. However their existence or lack there of, changes not our task.
