1996-10-16 - Wisdom
Colossians 1:9 9 For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you and asking God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all spiritual wisdom and understanding.
Good morning my good friends. I want to lean on you folks this morning and pour my heart out to you all in search of some understanding and perhaps in the process a devotional will come out of this. : )
Last night at 11:30 my phone rang. The dreaded late night call. It was my wife's father who is a medical doctor. He had just been to visit my wife's cousin Martha at Duke Medical Center. Martha is 39 years old and in her last days of a year long battle with cancer. The phone call was to let me know the end is near and to keep our schedules very flexible. As I laid back in bed my cry out to God was, "Why Lord"? Why do these things happen? Come on God can't you put a hedge around us? Can't you protect your children?
The above three verses came to mind. And then in a miraculous way Martha's life was replayed in my mind. When Martha was sixteen she had a baby and was married. Her first husband left her when the baby was 2 years old. Why Lord? Why did that happen? When Martha's baby was sixteen she had a baby. So at the age of 32 Martha is a grandmother. Why Lord? Why did that happen? Then in God's soft voice it hit me. The light bulb went off in my head. God granted me the wisdom to understand. Looking back over her life, I saw the joy she experienced in having a child and a grandchild at such a young age. I saw the God allowed Martha to experience that joy in her condensed life. She experienced the joys that many folks never experience over a full lifetime. I sat up and bed and smiled at God and gave thanks to God for giving Martha the life He gave her. I thanked God for letting her experience the joys of a lifetime although it was a short life.
God taught me a great lesson last night. God taught me again to pray for wisdom and understand. God taught me to focus on the good parts of my own life. Focus on His great blessings and not to dwell on the trials and heartaches of this life. God taught me again that He is outside the dimension of time and that all things do work for the best for those who love Him. Romans 8:28 And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.
Folks … HE really is an AWEsome God! In your darkest moments try to focus on what you have been given and not what you lack. Be content with your life, it is in good hands.
Dear Lord, Forgive me to being angry with you and not trying to understand all things in life. Lord grant me wisdom and understanding. Help me to focus on the blessings and to be thankful for all things. Most of all I thank you again and again for the healing power and the redeeming power of our Savior Jesus, in HIS name we pray, Amen.
