1996-09-04 - Lord of All
Good morning. This morning I want to attempt to illustrate a point using a passage that troubles many people. I want to simplify this passage to hopefully drive home an important point for all of us.
Matt 15:22 A Canaanite woman from that vicinity came to him, crying out, ``Lord, Son of David, have mercy on me! My daughter is suffering terribly from demon-possession." 23 Jesus did not answer a word.
Jesus ignores this woman. This troubles many and has troubled me for some time. But notice the title this woman uses for Jesus "Lord, Son of David". This is a Jewish Title that the Canaanite woman has no claim to. This title also implies Jesus was only Lord of the Jews. Jesus ignores her... Now look at the next verse.
25 The woman came and knelt before him. ``Lord, help me!" she said. 26 He replied, ``It is not right to take the children's bread and toss it to their dogs." 27 ``Yes, Lord," she said, ``but even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters' table." 28 Then Jesus answered, ``Woman, you have great faith! Your request is granted." And her daughter was healed from that very hour.
Notice the title now she uses for Jesus. Simply "LORD"! This woman understands what Jesus' own family, the disciples and the Pharisee do not yet understand. Jesus is LORD of all! To which Jesus replies... Woman you have great faith!
Is Jesus LORD of all of your life? Is HE the LORD of every area of your life? Do you let Him? Or do you do like me and let Jesus be Lord of only the parts of your life you want him to be Lord over? Is He only Lord on Sundays, but not the other six days of the week?
Last week's devotional was on pouring your heart out to God. Join me this week in pouring our hearts out to Him, asking Him to help us make Him LORD of ALL of our lives.
Dear Father, Soften the harden places on my heart. Mend and mold me Lord into to being all you want me to be. Help me Lord to give you ALL of my life, not just the areas I want to give you. Lord forgive me for still being selfish and still wanting to cling to the areas of my life that I want to control. We praise you and thank you for being a patient, loving God that is Lord of all. In Jesus name we pray, Amen.
