PC-USA 1996-08-01 - Our Role vs God's

I don't know about you, but I sometimes find myself trying to take over God's roles! And conversely, I don't always do my own part. As David's memo in his office says: Do not feel like you are Totally responsible for everything. Thats my job. Love, God Wow, eh? : )

And as Howard Hendricks said in his book Living By The Book, "When I was a student in seminary, a choice man of God named Harry Ironside used to come and teach. I remember on one occasion somebody came up and said, "Dr. Ironside, I understand you get up early every morning to read and study your Bible." "Oh," he said, "I've been doing that all my life." "Well how do you manage to do it?" the inquirer asked. "Do you pray about it?" "No," he replied, "I get up." See, many of us are expecting God to do what God is expecting us to do. "' (Hendricks quote from Peter Kennedy's E-Mail Devotionals)

So what are the differences? Here are a couple:

Our salvation is God's role. We cannot earn our salvation or His love: Eph 2:8-9 (NIV) For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith--and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God-- 9 not by works, so that no one can boast.

Our service, borne of gratitude, is our role. 2 Cor 9:12 (NIV) This service that you perform is not only supplying the needs of God's people but is also overflowing in many expressions of thanks to God.

Praying about our needs is our role; worry is NOT our role. Phil 4:6 (NIV) Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.

Choosing what gifts we have, is God's role; using those gifts for the benefit of the church, is our role. 1 Cor 12:4-7 (NIV) There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit. 5 There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. 6 There are different kinds of working, but the same God works all of them in all men. 7 Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.

Praying for our lost family and friends, and sharing the Gospel with them are our responsibilities; saving them is God's responsibility. Once we pray and witness, we need to leave it with God, which is not easy! 2 Cor 9:10 (NIV) Now He who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will also supply and increase your store of seed and will enlarge the harvest of your righteousness.

Speaking the truth in love, to people who are on the wrong paths, is our responsibility. Changing those people is God's and their responsibilities. We are to do our role, and then "let it go" to Him. Gal 6:1 (NIV) Brothers, if someone is caught in a sin, you who are spiritual should restore him gently. But watch yourself, or you also may be tempted. But: 1 Cor 6:11 (NIV) And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.

Dear Lord, may we always be diligent to do our part, but may we also be careful to not do Your part. Give us discernment and strength to know the differences, and to follow Your will in this always. In Jesus' name amen.

Hope you all have good weekends!
