1996-05-17 - God the Righteous Judge
This week I am writing about something that -- I admit -- is not my favorite aspect of God's character to think about. ; ) But we must think about it, because it is Scriptural. God is the perfect, righteous judge.
Psa 7:11 (NIV) God is a righteous judge, a God who expresses his wrath every day.
I don't know about y'all, but I have been -- at different times -- both disappointed in, and at other times, pleasantly surprised by, our jury system. One jury I served on made, I felt, a very balanced decision. I felt that, as much as was humanly possible, justice was served in that case. However, on another jury I was on, some of my fellow jurors were swayed by the arguments of the defense; this was about as clear-cut as a case of guilt could be. But by the time the week was over, it was as if the policeman was on trial. : ( Isn't it neat that there is one Judge - the Judge who passes out judgments that will affect us eternally -- Who will never make a mistake. He will never compromise the truth. He will never lie. He won't be swayed by eloquent or crafty arguments or theatrics. We can trust in His righteous judgments.
Of course, if we got what we really deserve, knowing all this about God's justice would be scary, rather than comforting! But God loved us so much, that He made sure we could be righteous in His sight: 2 Cor 5:21 (NIV) God made Him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God.
I hope you will join me today, in thanking God (1) for his perfect righteousness that we can trust in, and (2) for giving us humans -- helpless on our own -- a means to receive this righteousness through faith in His Son.
